Thirty-eight workers died in a gas explosion at a lead mine in Plateau State, central Nigeria, on Wednesday, local sources reported. «So far, 38 deaths have been confirmed and about 27 others have been taken to the hospital,» said local official Ali Adam Idris to AFP. Ibrahim Datiju Sani, a mine worker who went to the scene, said the explosion occurred between 7:30 and 8:00 a.m. and confirmed the death toll. Plateau State has historically been a hub for mining in Nigeria, which has sharply declined in recent years.
