Nigeria's President Declares State of Emergency Over Abduction Surge

Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu declared a nationwide security state of emergency on Wednesday and ordered the recruitment of additional security forces following the abduction of more than 350 people in the past ten days. Africa's most populous nation has come under intense pressure recently due to a series of kidnappings for which no one has claimed responsibility. The incidents have affected hundreds of people, including over 300 students and teachers from a Catholic school in Baperi, Niger State (central-west), 25 Muslim schoolgirls in Maha, Kebbi State (northwest), and 38 worshippers at a church in Eruku and ten others in Espau. According to a presidential statement, the police force will be increased by 20,000 personnel, bringing the total number of security forces to 50,000.
